Erase

Function Description: Creates a feature class by overlaying input features with erase features. Only the parts of the input features that lie outside the erase features are copied to the output feature class.

Notes:

  • The geometries that overlap between the Input Features and Erase Features parameters will be removed.

  • The Erase Features parameter can be points, lines, or polygons, provided that the feature type level of the Input Features is the same or lower. Polygon erase features can be used to erase polygons, lines, or points from the input features; line erase features can be used to erase lines or points from the input features; point erase features are only used to erase points from the input features.

  • The attribute values from the input feature class will be copied to the output feature class.

Steps

  1. Find the Toolbox -> Vector Tools -> Overlay Analysis -> Erase tool, and double-click to open the tool window.

Parameter Description:

  • Input Features: The input feature class.
  • Erase Features: The features used to erase overlapping input features.
  • Output Feature Class: This feature class contains only those input features that do not overlap with the erase features.
  • Add Result to Project: This option is valid only when outputting the feature class results to a GPKG database within the project. Checking this box will automatically create a layer for the result data and add it to the project.
