Lidar technology has become widely accepted in disaster management applications. Its precision allows extraction of 3D shapes and accurately locates features. These can be used for measurement to monitor current land subsidence and analyze potential trend of subsidence, allowing preventive measures to be taken. High resolution maps can be generated from lidar for highlighting important information about an area such as classifying safe locations for shelter and identifying danger areas for mudslides or flooding. Mobile ground based or aerial (UAV) based Lidar allows agencies to react promptly before, during and after massive disasters, making it a very important technology in real-time disaster response and management.
