Forest Inventory

Traditional forest inventory practices mainly rely on topographic maps and field-based survey. Now foresters can use Lidar data to analyze forest structure and biomass. Multi-return Lidar can be used in forestry applications, like estimating ground surface and tree height. Further calculation and analysis will help them manage forest resources, examine the health condition of trees. Traditional inventory relies on statistical sampling methods and results are derived from systematical sampling plots in forest stands. These results lack reliability and precision. Lidar technology shows significant advantages in forestry applications, as it overcomes almost all the limits of traditional survey methods. After tree segmentation with Lidar technology, the forest inventory can be operated at individual tree level. Individualtree attributes including tree position, canopy geometric volume, canopy cover and vertical profiles can be calculated. Additionally, the forest DEM can be automatically extracted from Lidar data, and used to rebuild 3D scenes.

3. Tree Segmentation: Segment using the point cloud tree segmentation module in LiForest and extract individual tree information, including tree location, height, crown diameter, etc.

4. Digital elevation model (DEM): Points classified as ground points are used to generate the DEM.
